Kids First Visit To The Dentist
Children's Dentistry In Colorado Springs

Municipal Concrete - Local Contractors | Flat & Fancy7454Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD,) we recommend the “first visit by first birthday.” During your child's dentist appointment Dr. Derek and the staff will likely use a soft toothbrush to gently clean your child’s teeth and then complete a knee-to-knee exam in which the child is held by their parent/caregiver and leaned backwards into Dr. Derek’s lap. This examination method is recommended by the AAPD as it is more comforting to the child. Dr. Derek will check your child’s teeth for signs of cavities as well as their gums and oral soft tissues to ensure they are healthy. At the end of the exam, we will recommend painting a fluoride varnish on their teeth to help keep the enamel strong. This fluoride varnish has been shown to be very safe as it is very slowly released from the teeth, and fluoride is one of the most effective ways to prevent decay. It is very normal and age-appropriate for young children to fuss and cry during the exam as this experience is new for them. Over time your child will become more comfortable with their dental visit, and hopefully they will look forward to visiting our office!
